Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of Parlance ("we", "us", "our"), a language learning platform available at parlance.la (the "Service"). Parlance is operated from the United Kingdom.

By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. The Service

Parlance is an AI-powered language learning platform that provides:

  • AI conversation practice in your target language
  • AI-generated reading stories at varying difficulty levels
  • Vocabulary tracking and spaced repetition review
  • Text-to-speech and speech-to-text for listening and speaking practice

The Service currently supports the following languages: English, Russian, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Turkish, Polish, and Simplified Chinese.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. If you are between 13 and 18, you must have parental or guardian consent. By using the Service, you represent that you meet these requirements.

3. Accounts

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials. You agree to provide accurate information when creating your account and to keep it up to date.

You may sign in using an email and password or through Google OAuth. If you use Google sign-in, we receive your name, email, and profile information from Google in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

4. Your Content

You retain ownership of any content you provide to the Service, including messages, conversation topics, and voice input ("Your Content").

By using the Service, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to process, store, and transmit Your Content solely to the extent necessary to operate the Service and provide its features to you. This includes sending Your Content to third-party AI providers as described in our Privacy Policy.

You are responsible for any content you submit through the Service. You should not share sensitive personal information (such as medical, financial, or legal details) in conversations with the AI, as this data is processed by third-party providers.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose
  • Use the Service to generate abusive, harmful, hateful, illegal, or infringing content
  • Attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Service or its systems
  • Interfere with or disrupt the Service
  • Use automated tools to access the Service (scraping, bots, etc.)
  • Share your account credentials with others
  • Reverse engineer or attempt to extract the source code of the Service

6. AI-Generated Content

The Service uses artificial intelligence (powered by OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google) to generate stories, conversations, translations, and other learning content.

Important:

  • AI-generated content may contain errors, inaccuracies, or unnatural language. It is intended as a learning aid, not a definitive reference.
  • We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or appropriateness of any AI-generated content.
  • AI-generated stories may reference real places, events, or cultural topics for educational context. Any resemblance to real persons is coincidental.
  • You should not rely on AI-generated translations or grammar explanations as your sole source of language instruction.

You are solely responsible for how you use content generated by the Service. We are not liable for any decisions made or actions taken based on AI-generated content.

7. Voice Features

The Service offers optional voice features:

  • Speech-to-text: Your voice input is sent to OpenAI for transcription. We do not store your audio.
  • Text-to-speech: Audio is generated by Google Cloud services. Generated audio files are cached on our servers.

By using voice features, you consent to this processing.

8. Third-Party Services

The Service relies on third-party providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Pollinations for AI content generation, image generation, speech processing, and authentication. We are not responsible for outages, errors, or service interruptions caused by these providers. In the event of third-party service disruption, parts of the Service may be temporarily unavailable or degraded.

9. Intellectual Property

All content, design, code, and branding of the Service is owned by Parlance or its licensors. You may not reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works from the Service without our permission.

AI-generated learning content (stories, conversations) created for you through the Service is provided for your personal, non-commercial learning use.

10. Early Access

The Service is currently in early access and available by invitation only. An invitation code is required to create an account. We reserve the right to limit access at our discretion.

As an early access product, the Service may contain bugs, undergo significant changes, or have features added or removed without notice. By using the Service during early access, you acknowledge and accept these conditions.

11. Availability and Changes

We aim to keep the Service available but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service at any time without notice.

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting updated Terms on the Service. Your continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.

12. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law:

  • The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied.
  • We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service.
  • Our total liability to you for any claim arising from the Service shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or £50, whichever is greater.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited under English law.

13. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Parlance from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the Service or violation of these Terms.

14. Termination

You may delete your account at any time. Upon deletion, all your personal data, conversations, stories, vocabulary, and review history will be permanently removed in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

We may terminate or suspend your access to the Service at any time for any reason, including violation of these Terms.

15. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising from these Terms or the Service shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

16. Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
